Description
Akpi is a round, yellow-brown seed, similar to a rounded almond, produced by the djansang (Ricinodendron heudelotii) tree, which grows mainly in western Africa. The seeds are collected from its fruits, boiled and sun-dried. They smell like chocolate and have a mild aromatic taste that leaves the mouth slightly bitter. While the Ivorian name is “akpi”, it also has other names in other countries, such as “njangsa” or “essessang” in Cameroon or “wama” in Ghana.
Health Benefits: Boost female fertility (oestrogen induction property), treat cough and cold (saponin concentration), help curtail anemia (minerals and phytochemical), treat venereal diseases (antioxidants, alkaloid, saponins, flavonoids), prevent cancer (anticarcinogenic property).
How to cook: Its powdered form can be used in soup as seasoning. Beaten into paste it can be added to soup as a thickener.
